the 2014 lavazza calendar

by martin schoeller

I dedicate this calendar to Juli Soler

I think inspiration is a word
which is always associated with creativity.

It is an impulse from which an idea is formed
It’s something which occurs while I’m working, travelling, thinking, reading or relaxing.

To be inspired or not.
That’s what counts.

The cover is representative of the raw material.
A magical products, a products with a soul, without which it’s impossible to create.

We’re in the fountain of knowledge

The quality of the ingredients is very important

But the quality of ideas is also fundamental

My photograph illustrates
the depth of meaning of my cuisine.

Everyday life is my inspiration
and I can come at any moment.

While I’m playing
with children

choosing
an ingredient

when i come across
certain scent

i’m listening
to silence.

I draw inspiration for my cuisine from the land,
my land, where my roots are.

In those very same paddy-fields that I splashed around in summer as a child, I now look for quality rice.

The ingredients I chose for the photo
to represent me are

rice, frogs, rice pickers and and rice fields,
because they are all things which are part of me, my homeland.

fresh seasonal ingredients are my colours.

Rice is my blank canvas

I think it’s the balance of contrasts
which makes a great dish.

My inspiration definitely comes from my homeland,
Campania.

If I close my eyes, I see My Vesuvius

Water is the source of
my inspiration.

Fish is the main
ingredient which I usually
favour of my cuisine.

WHY
EGGS?
Because an egg is the symbol of new life, of transformation.

Which one thing has inspired me the most?
Hens, definitely.

Martin Schoeller was born in Munich, Germany in 1968. He currently lives and works in New York, NY. He was deeply influenced by August Sander, Bernd and Hilla Becher, who spawned a school known as the Becher-Schüler. Schoeller worked as an assistant to Annie Leibovitz from 1993 to 1996. His portraits are exhibited and collected internationally

I am a great admirer of Helmut Newton, I worked for Annie Leibovitz and I admire his work, for this reason I'm happy to have been chosen for this year's edition.

I like to create an intimate atmosphere,
establish a personal relationship, one by one, with my subjects.
